An assessment process that ensures excellence

The Royal College's oversees postgraduate medical education on a continuum that begins with accreditation, continues through the process of establishing a physician's credentials and culminates in Royal College examinations.

We accredit Canadian residency programs to ensure the highest-quality medical education. Our credentialing system ensures that the physicians who emerge from residency programs and become eligible for certification meet the high standards set out by the Royal College. Physicians who successfully sit our examinations achieve the internationally recognized gold standard for highest-quality education.

We have established alternate routes to certification to accommodate the various training pathways that physicians may follow, including those of international medical graduates.

CanMEDS has become integral to the Royal College standard, and is now an important staple in all Canadian medical education programs as well as in many other countries around the world.
