Objective
To support quality research in Canada relevant to the field of postgraduate medical education or continuing professional development.
Eligibility
Applicants must be involved in teaching and/or medical education research in Canada. Applications may be individual or joint, involving one or more departments, disciplines, or faculties of medicine. It is not necessary to be a Fellow of the Royal College or a physician; however, a Fellow of the Royal College must contribute to the research project.
Applications must meet contemporary standards of educational research, which include the relevance of the research question, the quality of the research design, ethical review of the submission, accountability for funds received, and the ability to complete the project during the funding period.
Submission
Applications must be submitted by completing the official grant form. Applications must be submitted electronically at awards@royalcollege.ca.
All supporting documents must be submitted in PDF format.
Selection
The Royal College Educational Research and Development Committee acts on behalf of the Awards Committee to assess proposals and name successful applicants.
Selection is based on the scientific merit and clarity of the proposal, and its relevance to the grant's objective. The following areas of research are encouraged:
curriculum design and implementation, instructional methods, assessment, program evaluation, continuing education, professional development, and faculty development.
Preference will be given to work that is considered worthy of inclusion in a peer-reviewed publication.
Number
One or more grants will be awarded each year. Only one grant per year per principal investigator will be awarded.
Value
Up to $25,000 per year of study to a maximum of $50,000 per project.
Decisions regarding allocation dollars will be made on an ad hoc basis and could include amounts ranging from as little as $5,000 through $50, 000.
An amount equivalent to 75% of the grant will be disbursed on commencement, and 25% on receipt of a final report at project completion. The final report must be sent to Grant Administrator, Office of Professional Affairs, Royal College.
Projects approved for funding beyond one year will receive subsequent years' funding following receipt of a satisfactory progress report on completion of one year's study.
Duration
Applicable to projects of a maximum 3 years' duration.
Budget
Budget and justification must be provided in a one-page outline. Please refer to budgetary guidelines appended to the application form.
Dissemination
The publication of research findings is highly encouraged. The financial support of the "Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada" must be acknowledged in all publications resulting from this grant. Successful applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their findings as a workshop, paper or poster to the Royal College Annual Conference.

5 pm (EST), March 2, 2012. Late applications will not be considered.
