This pre-conference workshop is designed for beginner level program directors and clinical educators who want to incorporate simulation-based education activities into their programs, but have little practical experience with this type of education. The activities planned for the day will provide a broad introduction to the fundamentals of experiential learning and simulation, as well as its' application to different areas of residency education. Educational objectives will be achieved through a mixture of plenary interactive lectures and small group sessions/workshops. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to outline the educational theory behind simulation-based education; recognize the importance of incorporating simulation into the educational curriculum of residents; develop simulation case scenarios based on defined learning objectives; apply common debriefing techniques to simulation (and clinical) scenarios in order to promote reflective practice, in a 'safe' learning environment.

This pre-conference workshop is designed for intermediate level frontline teachers, program directors and curriculum designers to introduce them to key elements of an integrated assessment program. Using an interactive presentation style, workshop facilitators will guide participants in developing a practical assessment program that addresses their needs. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to design an assessment program that maps to the educational goals of their residency program; including the use of tailored milestones; defend the reliability and validity of the data (with an emphasis on qualitative data) that informs assessment decisions; describe the key operational issues of an assessment committee; translate the goals of an assessment program to the specific needs of a learner, including the promotion of self-assessment seeking and reflection.

This pre-conference workshop is designed for beginner to intermediate frontline teachers and educators who want to familiarize themselves with the CanMEDS Framework and who are seeking practical tips to improve their teaching of the CanMEDS Roles. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to compare and contrast the different CanMEDS roles, adopt educational tools for clinical teaching of each of the CanMEDS roles; develop new ways of teaching CanMEDS to learners in clinical situations based on examples and exercises in the sessions; use a change management framework to help promote colleagues to adopt new tools and techniques for teaching CanMEDS Roles.

This interactive pre-conference workshop is designed for any physician in training, junior and mid-career, who wishes to more effectively use their time. Upon completion of this session, participants will be aware of the principles of effective time management; able to reflect on their own personal and professional goals; able to analyze their individual time management skills and strategies; able to list the principles of effective time management; and able to review practical strategies applicable to their own setting. This pre-conference workshop is designed for educators (beginner as well as advanced) and residents interested by the acquisition of clinical reasoning all personnel interested in learning clinical reasoning and by the difficulties of reasoning in education. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to map the reasoning processes; identify opportune moments for learning specific elements of clinical reasoning; identify reasoning errors; propose remediation activities for residents with persistent reasoning difficulties.

Clinical teachers and medical educators often create novel teaching strategies, design new assessment methods, or develop new programs or curricula. However, many of these innovations have not been shared with peers in the form of a publication. In this hands-on workshop on writing for publication, participants will work through the steps needed to take an innovation in medical education to an article ready for submission. Participants will particularly benefit from this workshop if they come with an innovation in mind.
This pre-conference workshop is designed for those who have not published in medical education. Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to identify innovations that merit publication in medical education; describe factors that enhance the likelihood of getting published; outline the steps in writing an article for publication; apply these concepts to their own innovations.
This workshop will provide participants with educational concepts, practical hints and guidelines. A portion of the program will be specifically targeted to each group in a format designed to encourage active participation and discussion.
