2020 Special Meeting of the Members
On Thursday, May 28, 2020, a special meeting of the members was held. 1,100 Fellows and 292 Resident Affiliates were in attendance.
Results of vote
Members voted against the threefold motion asking Council to consider an alternative one-time path to certification for those candidates who were scheduled to sit the spring 2020 examinations, including the possibility of certification without examination.
The motions as framed by the petitioners are outside of the powers of the members set out in the bylaw and legislation to bind the organization. The results of the vote are directional and non-binding. Regardless of the non-binding nature of the vote, the special meeting and its results are important. It means Council will have a strong sense of what matters to you – our members.
The Council of the Royal College will meet to discuss the outcome of the members’ vote on the motions. As members voted against the motions, Council will carefully consider that advice relative to the inability to provide the exams prior to June 30, 2020, and also should the fall exam time frame become challenging.
An update on these deliberations will be emailed by Dr. Susan Moffatt-Bruce, CEO of the Royal College, to all Fellows and meeting participants on June 5, 2020.
On March 31, 2020, John David Neary, MD, FRCPC, submitted a petition requesting a special meeting of the members to consider the decision made with our partners to postpone the spring 2020 written examinations to the fall. This decision was communicated to exam candidates on March 13.
The petition was signed by just under five percent of our membership. Dr. Neary and the petitioners put forward a threefold motion that called for an alternative one-time path to certification for those candidates who were scheduled to sit the spring 2020 examinations, including the possibility of certification without examination.
In response, Council exercised its discretion to grant this call for a special meeting on May 28, 2020.
As future Fellows of the Royal College, Resident Affiliates were welcome to attend this meeting to listen to the discussions and ask questions. Resident Affiliates were not eligible to vote at this meeting.
