Terminology in Medical Education Project

The Office of Specialty Education is working towards agreement on a glossary of terms that can be shared and adopted across the world of medical education.

As the Royal College considers new categories of discipline recognition and works to develop new assessment routes for certification, a common lexicon is intended to help clarify discussions across all stakeholders, particularly with commonly used terms like “Fellow” and “International Medical Graduate.”

In 2012, the Office of Specialty Education initiated consultations with a broad group of stakeholders to gather valuable feedback on the proposed terms and definitions. A penultimate draft of the glossary is available.

The glossary is currently offered in English only. The French translation of the document is nearing completion.
