CanMEDS Acknowledgments

Since it was developed in the 1990s, CanMEDS has been a truly collaborative effort involving extensive empirical research and wide consultation. We gratefully acknowledge the many contributors to the 1996, 2005 and 2015 versions of the CanMEDS Framework.

The Royal College is delighted to be a co-chair of the CanMEDS Consortium, a collaboration of 13 national and provincial health care organizations in Canada. Ensuring Canadian doctors have access to the world’s best training model for patient care — the CanMEDS Framework — is their shared priority. We are truly grateful to these organizations for pledging to embed the CanMEDS Framework in their respective areas of work across the continuum of a Canadian doctor’s education and career. This collaboration is unprecedented and represents a major step forward for the profession.

Acknowledgements — The CanMEDS 2015 Physician Competency Framework

The Royal College mission could not be accomplished without the unwavering support of the hundreds of medical educators, practising physicians and specialists, residents, committee members and staff. We would like to recognize the hundreds of volunteers who have served on the CanMEDS working groups over the past two years. As a result of their efforts, the CanMEDS Framework has been updated and revised, thus enhancing future learning and assessment of the CanMEDS competencies. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada wishes to gratefully acknowledge the following individuals who made invaluable contributions to this project:

Key Contributors

EXPERT WORKING GROUPS

With input from key partners, the Royal College assembled 11 Expert Working Groups (EWGs) to examine the seven core CanMEDS domains; of these groups, four focused on distinct aspects of the Scholar domain and two focused on aspects of the Professional domain. All of the groups were advised by two additional EWGs on integrating new content related to patient safety and quality improvement and to eHealth respectively across the seven CanMEDS Roles.

Each EWG was composed of medical educators and practising physicians from a range of specialties (i.e., representatives from the College of Family Physicians of Canada, Collège des médecins du Québec and Royal College) and provinces. Students and trainees were included wherever possible. The EWGs were tasked with:

  • reviewing the CanMEDS 2005 Framework to identify concepts potentially requiring clarification or modification, as well as any gaps or redundancies in the competencies;
  • incorporating new themes such as patient safety, quality improvement and eHealth into the framework;
  • developing draft milestones for each CanMEDS Role;
  • ensuring that the framework is practical and useful for education across the continuum; and
  • acting on feedback from consultations and integrating relevant content into the revised CanMEDS Framework.
