Accreditation of Simulation Programs
Simulation-based education is a critical method of learning. The accreditation of Simulation Programs has helped advance and uphold best practices for the use of Simulation in medical education.
The Royal College is announcing a new phase in the delivery of high-quality simulation opportunities to trainees across the learning continuum. The simulation program accreditation process in its current form will be sunset, to make way for the next iteration which will entail embedding expectations for simulation education more seamlessly into postgraduate medical education (PGME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accreditation processes.

Applications due to be submitted on November 1, 2022 will be accepted and the Royal College is committed to continuing usual support during the application process and throughout the accreditation cycle. Virtual site visits will take place in the winter of 2022.
Frequently asked questions
Why was the decision to sunset Simulation Program accreditation made?
Recognizing that simulation is a critical method for learning throughout the continuum, it is time to fully integrate the expectations for simulation education into existing accreditation processes. This next step is aligned with our strategic plan and aims to simplify and enhance both value and access to high quality learning experiences.
Our program’s cycle is up for renewal and we have started the process of application. Will this effort be lost?
We recognize the amount of work involved in the application process and the value placed on accreditation. Applications for programs who have started their application process for the November application deadline will be accepted and we will honor the service agreement for the full cycle of accreditation. Programs who have started their application can opt to continue with the application process or not. Any application fee submitted will be refunded if a program chooses not to continue with the application.
When will you stop accepting applications/renewals?
Applications/renewals will no longer be accepted after November 2022.
When and how will expectations for simulation education be integrated within PGME and CPD accreditation?
In preparing for the work to integrate simulation education into existing processes beyond spring 2023, an invitation will be extended to involve simulation leads and medical education stakeholders in the conversation regarding the best approach in the transition. Members of the community will be invited to actively contribute to the vision of a future system that will evolve gradually over time.
We are an accredited simulation program. What will happen to our program’s accreditation cycle?
The simulation programs will continue to be recognized as Royal College accredited programs until the cycle end date indicated on their Notification of Accreditation letter. The Royal College will continue to provide support for the duration of the cycle.
We are an international accredited simulation program. Does this change apply to me?
Yes, it applies to all Royal College accredited simulation programs.
Does my program still need to submit action plans and/or interim reports to the Royal College?
Yes, we expect simulation programs to continue working on their adherence to the national standard when possible and updating the Royal College via action plans and/or interim reports. The Royal College will continue to provide support throughout the accreditation cycle.
Will there be a lapse of time between the end of my program’s accreditation cycle and the implementation time of the future resolution?
It is likely that for some programs, some time may elapse between the end of their cycle and the integration with PGME and CPD accreditation cycles. Until the future of simulation accreditation is implemented, Royal College accredited simulation programs will continue to be listed on our website.
As a Royal College accredited simulation program, we leverage our limited provider status and accredit our simulation-based activities for the Maintenance of Certification program. Will these continue to be honored?
Yes, we will continue to honor accreditation of the simulation-based activities for the duration of your program’s accreditation cycle.
I am a member of the Simulation Accreditation Committee, when will the last meeting be held?
The last Simulation Accreditation Committee meeting is being planned for the Spring of 2023.
Are there opportunities to contribute to the development of the future of simulation accreditation?
Yes, in preparing for the work to integrate simulation education into existing processes beyond the spring of 2023, an invitation will be extended to involve simulation leads and medical education stakeholders to collaborate and advise on the best approach for the transition. If you would like to express your interest in participating, please email sim-accreditation@royalcollege.ca.
