Who is caring for seniors in Canada? A study of physician care for seniors

Health Care for an Aging Population: A Study of how Physicians Care for Seniors in Canada analyzes fee-for-service medical service data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information’s National Physician Database (2015-16). Study results feature a series of key metrics that provide an overview of how the physician workforce cares for seniors including the

  • percentage of physicians who provide care to seniors,
  • volume of services provided to seniors,
  • intensity with which specialties focus their service delivery on seniors, and
  • types of medical care physicians provide to seniors.

With this study, the Royal College aims to shed light on health care delivery by physicians to seniors and provide insights that could spark more research needed to understand how Canada’s health system cares for seniors now and in the future.
