What is a program consultation visit?

A program consultation is a diagnostic evaluation of a residency training program. The evaluation uses the Royal College International Program Standards as the framework for the evaluation.

The purpose of this activity is to

  • evaluate your program against our international program standards, and
  • provide recommendations that, if implemented, will make your program eligible for Royal College accreditation.

Once we receive your request to begin our accreditation process, we’ll schedule a program consultation visit for each residency program that you’re seeking to accredit.

Each program must have its own review. If you have more than one program that you want accredited, we may schedule multiple visits. Generally, up to four programs can be reviewed during one standard consultation visit.

Three stages of the consultation visit

  1. Pre-visit: Complete and submit our International Program Questionnaires (Parts 1 and 2).
  2. Onsite visit: Two accreditation experts and one Royal College facilitator will conduct a two-day onsite review of your residency program.
  3. Post-visit report: Our team will write a detailed Program Consultation Report with recommendations. We’ll support you and your program with implementing these recommendations by offering coaching, workshops and visiting experts.
