FAQ

About Membership Dues

Annual membership dues are presented at the Annual Meeting of the Members (AMM) held each February. During the AMM, Fellows are invited to participate in and vote on proposed annual fees for the following year.

1. When will I receive my membership card?

Membership cards are no longer mailed. Once payment has been processed, access the Self-Service menu to download your membership card.

2. I am retired (or will retire soon), what do I do?

If you are retired (or about to retire) from all medical or health-related professional activities, no longer carry a license from a medical regulatory authority, and not in part-time practice or reduced-scope practice (such as surgical assisting or teaching), you are eligible for the Retired category. Please complete the Confirmation of Retirement form.

3. What is a reinstatement fee and why it is being implemented?

The reinstatement fee (C$500) includes both the late fee (C$150) in addition to a reinstatement fee (C$350). These fees encourage timely payment and cover the cost of administrative efforts.

4. What is reinstatement?

Reinstatement is the process of rejoining the Royal College by reopening the member account that was closed due to default payment of dues or resignation. The following activities will occur with reinstatement: reestablishing MOC cycle and adding the participant back to the Royal College Directory.

Payment and Receipts

  1. How do I pay?

Online by credit card: pay in full using your credit card

Online banking: To use online banking, simply log in to your financial institution’s website, add the Royal College to your list of payees and enter your Royal College ID as your account number. The following major financial institutions provide Fellows and MOC Program participants with an online banking service for payment of annual dues:

    • Bank of Montreal
    • Caisse Populaire Desjardins
    • CIBC
    • HSBC Canada
    • National Bank
    • PC Financial
    • RBC
    • Scotiabank
    • TD Canada Trust

By phone: Call and pay by credit card 613-730-6260 or 1-800-668-3740.

    Contact us: Finance Department
    Email: finance@royalcollege.ca
    Telephone: 613-730-6260; toll-free 1-800-668-3740

  2. I cannot locate my Royal College ID number.

You will find your ID number on your annual dues invoice. You can also recover your ID number through the Royal College’s secure access login page.

  3. I can’t find my password.

It is the same password that you would use to access the MAINPORT ePortfolio. If you don’t remember it, you can reset it online via the Royal College’s secure access login page lost my ID number.

  4. Receipt for proof of payment / income tax

Member invoices and receipts dated as of December 1, 2023, onward are accessible through the member portal. Download your receipt here.

For records prior to December 1, 2023, please contact finance@royalcollege.ca. As a general note per CRA guidelines, the Royal College retains member payment records for seven years.

  5. Receipt states “no payments were made”

Verify you’ve selected the applicable year and receipt type. Visit the annual dues information page to review payment options.

  6. Receiving statements of a balance owing after payment

Statements are issued until the balance is paid in full. If you received a statement after issuing a payment, the likely cause is that there is a partial balance remaining. Refer to your last statement for your remaining balance. A receipt will be updated and available for download shortly after your payment has been processed.

  7. Credit for overpayment

Overpayments are reflected in your January statement. While the annual invoice will show the full membership fee due, when you pay online through the Royal College’s secure website, the balance owing will reflect any overpayment.

Fee Reduction (Fellows only)

  1. I have extraordinary financial or personal circumstances. How can the Royal College assist if I cannot afford to pay?

Use the fee reduction options available (exclusive to Fellows) to relieve financial burden. Subsequent renewal of the fee reduction is granted upon review by the membership team and may be subject to refusal.

It is inadvisable to have your account defaulted due to late payment of dues because your account will be subject to a late fee and a reinstatement fee. We highly recommend contacting membership services to request a fee reduction. Apply for a fee reduction here.

Note: Maintenance of Certification cycles may be adjusted based on the duration of family or health leaves. Please see the online Maintenance of Certification Cycle Adjustment form

  2. How long do I have to wait to pay after I apply for a fee reduction?

If you pay through your financial institution’s website, you can pay the correct reduced amount right away. However, if you wish to pay through the Royal College’s secure website, please wait five working days while we apply the fee reduction to your account. Once we have updated your balance, we will send you an email confirming that you can pay the reduced amount online through our website.

  3. I’m a Fellow participating in Post-Grad Studies. Are there fee reductions and what are the expectations for MOC?

If you are in full-time postgraduate learning and a Fellow you are eligible for a fee reduction. As a Royal College Fellow you have been enrolled in a five-year MOC cycle and must meet the usual adherence and compliance requirements for Royal College MOC participation. Royal College Fellows can earn and claim up to 100 credits a year towards their MOC cycle for postgraduate studies alone.

International Fellows

  1. I reside and practice outside of Canada. Can I get a special rate?

Yes. Fellows residing and practising outside of Canada pay a special rate of C$720.

The fees for Fellows outside of Canada are reduced as we take into account that some of the tangible benefits for Fellows are not as relevant when practising abroad. Your participation, along with the other 4,700 Fellows outside Canada, greatly assist us in our mission to ensure high standards and quality of specialty medicine.

Tip: If you are an International Fellow, keep up to date with payment, which is due annually 30 days following the invoice issue date, and update your contact address.

Default of Dues and Reinstatement Fees for Members

  1. If I do not pay my annual dues (Fellows) and I am removed because of default for not paying my dues, what are the implications?

If you allow your membership to lapse (by default of dues), the following will occur:

    • your name will be removed from the register of Fellows;
    • you may no longer be able to use the FRCPC/FRCSC designation; and
    • you are no longer entitled to any other benefits of membership.

This means that your account balance is cleared ($0) and your MOC cycle is closed.

Note: prior to allowing your membership to lapse, please verify licensure requirements set out by your medical regulatory authority regarding the maintenance of an active MOC cycle.

If the dues deadline has passed, here are your options:

    1. Maintain your membership by paying before August 31. You will continue to be able to use the Royal College designation (Fellow) and participate in the MOC program. Late fees will apply.
    2. Default and not pay by August 31. Should you choose to default on payment of annual dues, you will still be able to rejoin. Question 2 below describes the process and implications if reinstated within 12 months, or after more than 12 months.
    3. Resign. If you wish to resign, please complete the resignation form. Question 2 below describes the process and implications if reinstated within 12 months, or after more than 12 months.

    Tips:

    • Pay dues on time. The annual deadline is annually 30 days following the invoice issue date.
    • If you want to resign or retire, you must complete the appropriate forms.
    • Recognize that late or non-payment may result in a) late fee or b) reinstatement fee (combo of late fee plus reinstatement fee).

  2. Should my membership lapse or I resign, can I be reinstated in the future (e.g., in 6, 12 or 24 months)?

You can apply for reinstatement of membership at any time. To do so, you will need to contact the Royal College Services Centre and request a reinstatement package.

    Within 12 months from removal

    • You will be asked to pay your annual dues in arrears in addition to applicable reinstatement fee.
    • Your five-year MOC cycle will continue from your original start date.

More than 12 months from removal

    • You will not have outstanding dues to pay.
    • You will receive a new five-year MOC cycle and credits from past cycles will not be carried forward.

  3. Should I resign instead of going into default of dues?

It’s best not to allow your account to go into default. Instead, you are strongly encouraged to resign by completing the resignation form. We will use your feedback to improve our products and learn how we can better serve you.

We will always warmly welcome you back when you are ready.
