John Michael Richard Cox, MD, FRCPC, died on September 4, 2023, in Ringgold, Ga., at age 91. He was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1964. Throughout his career, he practised Anesthesiology in Illinois and Tennessee, holding positions that included associate professor in Anesthesiology and director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children's Memorial Hospital of Northwestern University in Chicago, and chief of the Department of Anesthesiology at Baroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. William Harold C. Holt, MD, FRCPC, died on May 30, 2023, in Vancouver, B.C., at age 85. He was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1967. Dr. Holt obtained his medical degree from the University of British Columbia in 1962. For 25 years, he worked at the Burnaby Mental Health Centre, where he eventually became the director. During this time, Dr. Holt, who was very committed to helping others, was also instrumental in establishing one of British Columbia’s first comprehensive mental health programs. Karl Alleyne Massiah, MBBS, FRCSC, died on June 19, 2023, in Etobicoke, Ont., at age 82. He was certified by the Royal College in Orthopedic Surgery in 1972. Dr. Massiah became the first chief of orthopedics at the newly established Etobicoke General Hospital where he had a successful career and also served as president of the Medical Staff Association. He studied medicine at University College of the West Indies and later was instrumental in founding the University of the West Indies Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA). Manuel Gluck, MD, FRCPC, died on August 25, 2023, in Ottawa, Ont., at age 95. He was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1961. Dr. Gluck obtained his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1956. He practised as an obstetrician/gynecologist at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa and also spent some time working at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. After he left private practice, Dr. Gluck accepted a position with the Canadian Medical Protective Association. Read more about Dr. Gluck. 

Patrick Yoshiro Miki, MD, FRCPC, died on August 16, 2023, in Langley, B.C., at age 93. He was certified by the Royal College in Diagnostic Radiology in 1959. Dr. Miki obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1955. Following the completion of his postgraduate residency, he joined Dr. Henry Brown in Chilliwack, B.C., to start what is now known as Valley Medical Imaging. He practised Diagnostic Radiology until his retirement in 2003 and was well-respected among colleagues. Read more about Dr. Miki. 

Barry Leon Caplan, MD, FRCPC, died on May 5, 2023, in St. Albert, Alta., at age 82. He was certified by the Royal College in Diagnostic Radiology in 1971. Dr. Caplan obtained his medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1965. He is remembered as a wonderful role model and someone who was tirelessly devoted to his career in radiology. Richard M. McCutcheon, MD, FRCPC, died on April 27, 2023, in Etobicoke, Ont., at age 85. He was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1966. Dr. McCutcheon obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University in 1961. For close to 50 years, he practised as an anesthesiologist at Northwestern Hospital and Humber River Regional Hospital. Dr. McCutcheon was also a medical volunteer with Operation Smile and Hospital on Wheels Philippines. Read more about Dr. McCutcheon. 

Kieran Sylvester Mac Con, MBChB, FRCSC, died on April 26, 2023, in Richmond Hill, Ont., at age 79. He was certified by the Royal College in Orthopedic Surgery in 1977. Dr. Mac Con enjoyed a long and successful career at Mackenzie Health (formerly known as York Central Hospital) where he started as Richmond Hill’s first full-time orthopedic surgeon. There, Dr. Mac Con held numerous executive positions over the course of four decades. He also travelled to Northern Canada to provide orthopedic services to remote and underserved communities.
