Visual Material Preparation
Hematological Pathology exam
Paper 1 (SAQ) of the Hematological Pathology written exam will:
- Be administered on March 21, 2023.
- Consist of an examination with approximately 43 questions administered over three hours.
Paper 2 (Image Based Practical) of the Hematological Pathology written exam will:
- Be administered on March 22, 2023.
- Be divided into two sections.
- Consist of digital microscopy for the first 60 min section and static images for the second 120 min section.
Digital microscopy section
-
This section consists of approximately 3 questions and candidates will use a second computer provided to them to view slide groupings with Olympus software. Each grouping will include up to 10 digitized slides to be viewed. Each question will be allotted 20 minutes.
- A technician will enter the exam room to provide candidates with subsequent slide groupings at the end of each period.
- Candidates will not be able to view the previous slide groupings once the time for that grouping has elapsed. This process replicates the on-site experience used to administer practical examinations in previous years as candidates rotated between stations.
- candidates will use a primary computer to answer exam questions. Once the digital microscopy section is done, a technician will remove the second computer.
Static images section
- This section consists of approximately 12 questions and includes static images. This section will all be administered from a primary computer following the conclusion of the digital microscopy section.
Technicians will be on site if there are any computer issues during any sections of the examinations.
Neuropathology exam
Paper 1 (Fundamentals of Neuropathology) of the Neuropathology written exam will:
- Be administered on March 30, 2023.
- Consist of approximately 24 questions, administered over three hours.
Paper 2 (Static Image) of the Neuropathology written exam will:
- Be administered on March 31, 2023.
- Consist of approximately 54 questions containing static images, administered over three hours.
Paper 3 (Digital Microscopy) of the Neuropathology written exam will:
- Be administered on April 25, 2023
-
Consist of an examination including approximately 50 questions and will include the use of digital slides, to be viewed on a second computer provided to each candidate. Candidates will use Aperio Imagescope software to view the digital slides. Candidates will use a primary computer to answer exam questions.
- Present approximately 52 slides in total in 9-10 slide groupings. Each grouping will include up to six digitized slides to be viewed within a 15-minute period. A technician will enter the exam room to provide candidates with subsequent slide groupings at the end of each period. Candidates will not be able to view the previous slide groupings once the time for that grouping has elapsed. This process replicates the on-site experience used to administer practical examinations in previous years as candidates rotated between stations. Technicians will be on site if there are any computer issues during the examination.
Anatomical Pathology exam
Paper 1 (Basic Science and Applied Knowledge of Pathology) of the Anatomical Pathology written exam will:
- Be administered on April 3, 2023.
- Consist of an examination with approximately 28 questions to be administered over three hours.
Paper 2 (Virtual Microscopy and Static Image Based Practical) of the Anatomical Pathology written exam will:
- Be administered on April 4, 2023.
- Be divided into two 90-minute sections.
- Consist of digital microscopy for the first 90-minute section and static images for the second 90-minute section.

- Candidates will use a primary computer to answer exam questions. Once the digital microscopy section is done, a technician will remove the second computer.
Static images section
- This section consists of approximately 45 questions and includes static images. This section will all be administered from a primary computer following the conclusion of the digital microscopy section.
Technicians will be on site if there are any computer issues during any sections of the examinations.
