Subspecialty Training Requirements in
Pediatric Cardiology

These training requirements apply to those who begin training on or after July 1st, 2017.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Royal College Certification in Pediatrics or enrolment in a Royal College approved training program in Pediatrics (see requirements for these qualifications). All candidates must be certified in Pediatrics in order to be eligible to write the Royal College certification examination in Pediatric Cardiology.

MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Three (3) years of approved residency training, a maximum of one (1) year which may be undertaken in the PGY-4 year of Pediatrics. This period must include:

  1. Fourteen (14) blocks of clinical training, which must include:
    1. Four (4) blocks of pediatric ambulatory (outpatient pediatric) cardiology
    2. Two (2) blocks of pediatric cardiac intensive care unit
    3. Seven (7) blocks of pediatric clinical cardiology which must include the clinical care of children of all ages with heart disease, including consultation with children where primary disease is non-cardiac, and pre-, intra-, and post-operative care
    4. One (1) block of adult Cardiology which must include adult congenital heart disease
  2. Fourteen (14) blocks of clinical laboratory-based residency training as follows:
    1. Three (3) blocks of cardiac catheterization
    2. Six (6) blocks of pediatric echocardiography
    3. Three (3) blocks of electrophysiology
    4. One (1) block of cardiac pathology
    5. One (1) block of cardiac diagnostic imaging (CT/MR/Nuclear) Research
  3. Three (3) blocks of basic or clinical research leading to completion of a research project to the satisfaction of the residency program committee Electives
  4. Five (5) blocks of electives approved by the program director

NOTES:

For some content areas, experiences may be longitudinal rather than in a block format, at the discretion of the residency program committee.

Royal College certification in Pediatric Cardiology requires all of the following:

  1. Certification in Pediatrics;
  2. Successful completion of a 3-year Royal College accredited program in Pediatric Cardiology;
  3. Completion of a scholarly research, quality assurance, or educational project relevant to Pediatric Cardiology; and
  4. Successful completion of the certification examination in Pediatric Cardiology.

The 3-year program outlined above is to be regarded as the minimum training requirement. Additional year(s) of training may be required by the residency program committee to ensure that clinical competence has been achieved.

This document is to be reviewed by the Specialty Committee in Cardiology by December 2018.
