Subspecialty Training Requirements in Adult Respirology

These training requirements apply to those who begin training on or after July 1st, 2015.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Royal College certification in Internal Medicine or enrolment in a Royal College accredited training program in Internal Medicine (see requirements for these qualifications). All candidates must be certified in Internal Medicine in order to be eligible to write the Royal College certification examination in adult Respirology.
MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Two (2) years of approved residency in adult Respirology, a maximum of one year of which may be undertaken at the fourth year residency level during training for certification in Internal Medicine. This period must include:
- Minimum of twelve (12) blocks of clinical adult Respirology which must include:
- Minimum of four (4) blocks or equivalent of patient care in Respirology ambulatory care settings
- Minimum of four (4) blocks of acute care in-hospital Respirology
- Minimum of two (2) blocks in Critical Care Medicine
- Minimum of two (2) blocks in sleep medicine
- Minimum of six (6) blocks and a maximum of eight (8) blocks of electives, which may include further clinical training in Respirology or related disciplines, laboratory training, research, or other training approved by the program director
NOTES:
REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION
Royal College certification in adult Respirology requires all of the following:
- Royal College Certification in Internal Medicine;
- Successful completion of a 2-year Royal College accredited program in adult Respirology; and
- Successful completion of the certification examination in adult Respirology.
The 2-year program outlined above is to be regarded as the minimum training requirement. Additional training may be required by the program director to ensure that clinical competence has been achieved.
