James Barton, MD, FRCPC (Saskatoon, SK)
Dr Jim Barton received his MD degree from Memorial University in 1994. He obtained his Core Internal Medicine training at Queen’s University in Kingston (94-97), Fellowship training in Adult Nephrology at the University of Toronto (97-99) and worked as a Staff Nephrologist at UHN from 1999-2001 before moving to Saskatoon. He was appointed Clinical Professor of Medicine in 2012. He chaired UGME teaching for Nephrology/Urology from 2001-2009 and served as the Core Internal Medicine Assistant Program Director at U of S. In 2011 he developed the first Royal College Adult Nephrology Training Program at the College of Medicine and continues to serve as its Program Director. He remains an active teacher in both UGME and PGME programs and has received multiple teaching awards.
His areas of interest are acute kidney injury, medical education and continuing professional development. He founded the first CRRT program in Saskatoon over a decade ago. He served on the CSN Education Committee from 2006-2009 and Chaired the committee from 2009-2012. He is a former Royal College Examiner (Nephrology 2010-2017), the recipient of the 2015 CSN Distinguished Service Award, the 2014 CAME Clinical teacher of the Year Award (SK) and has been a Facilitator for Harvard Macy Institute “Leading Innovations in Health Care and Education for several years.
Currently he is the sitting Associate Dean, Continuing Medical Education at the College of Medicine and serves on the Professional Learning and Development Committee (PLDC) of the Royal College and Committee on Accreditation Continuing Medical Education (CACME). He has been married since 1997 to Anne PausJenssen (MD, FRCPC, M.Sc.) who is the Deputy Head Medicine. They have three sons.

Vinita Bindlish, MD, FRCSC
Dr. Bindlish graduated from medical school at McMaster University in 1995. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery from the University of Toronto in June 2000. She has been practicing in Kitchener-Waterloo since July 2001. Dr. Bindlish completed a Masters in Business Administration degree at Wilfred Laurier University in 2012 and completed a Masters in Health Law from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2014. Dr. Bindlish is currently enrolled in the Risk Management Certification program at Wilfred Laurier University. Her main areas of interest are organizational dynamics and strategy. She spends her spare time raising her two sons.
Dr. Valerie Schulz MD FRCPC MPH Founder, Palliative Medicine
Dr. Valerie Schulz graduated from Queen’s School of Medicine, completed a Royal College Fellowship in Anesthesiology at Western University, and a Master’s in Public Health at the University of Alberta. She focused her clinical career on advancing palliative medicine, patient care options and learner education programs. In 2017, Dr. Schulz received the Royal College designation, Founder, Palliative Medicine through participation in the inaugural Palliative Medicine Specialty and Examination Committees.
Dr. Valerie Schulz is dedicated to medical education scholarship and life-long learning for practicing physicians. As an Associate Dean for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) she has recognized the value in guiding physicians to maintain competence in their medical practice and engage in faculty development education to best support medical learners.
Dr. Schulz current roles include Founder, Palliative Medicine in the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine; Professor, Western University; Associate Dean, Continuing Professional Development at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University.

Sam Daniel, MD, FRCSC
Dr. Sam Daniel is a Professor of Otolaryngology and Pediatric Surgery and Associate Chair of Pediatric Surgery at McGill University. He is a clinician-scientist who established the McGill Auditory Sciences Laboratory, a world-class facility that develops models to further the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss. He also runs a tertiary care clinical practice in pediatric Otolaryngology at the Montreal Children's Hospital, where he also heads the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery division.
Sam has been an educator for the Royal College since the inception of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program and is the CPD Director of the Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec. He also serves on the CPD committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
He has received multiple awards including the 2013 Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Continuing Professional Development Innovation Award, Canada's top 40 under 40, Honour Awards from the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and The American Academy of Otolaryngology, and he was also inducted into the Triological Society. He is the recipient of The Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation's Medical Award of Excellence, which is awarded to a physician whose exceptional patient care, superior knowledge, valued teaching abilities and generous accessibility to the Hospital Community are an inspiration to others.
Valérie Anne Désilets, MD, FRCSC, FCCMG
Dr. Désilets practises medical genetics at the CIUSSSE de l’Estrie-CHUS in Sherbrooke. She completed her predoctoral academic training and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Université Laval. She achieved the status of Clinical Fellow of the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists in 1998, after a three-year fellowship at the University of British Columbia. She led the Prenatal Diagnosis Program at McGill University and then joined the genetics team at the CHU Sainte-Justine where she was involved in creating the Centre Intégré de Diagnostic Prénatal.
After completing a graduate microprogram in Pédagogie de la Santé (Health Education) at the Université de Sherbrooke, Dr. Désilets committed to teaching pre- and postdoctoral students from the FMHS’s program of medicine. She provides lectures on medical genetics and clinical embryology. She oversaw the development of a mentoring course (longitudinal for 4 years) to support the development of the practice and the professional identity of students in medicine. She is heavily involved in CPD as president of the CPD committee of her medical association (AMGQ), a guest speaker, and as a member of the governance committee of the FMSQ’s Méduse platform. She focuses on integrating introductory sciences in medical training, social responsibility, and lifelong learning, particularly in terms of transversal skills.

Ford Bursey, MD, FRCPC
Dr. Ford Bursey was Assistant Dean for Professional Development in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University in St. John’s from 2004 until 2014. He holds a Bachelor of Medical Science and received his MD from Memorial University. Following completion of his basic medical training, he completed two years of postgraduate training in gastroenterology at the University of Ottawa before returning to Memorial in 1988.
Ford is currently a staff physician in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at Eastern Health in St. John's. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and serves as the Governor for the Atlantic Provinces for ACP.
In addition to serving two terms on the Education Committee of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, Ford is a former Chair of the Education Committee for the Medical Advisory Committee of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada. He has also served as President of the Medical Staff Association of the St. John's Health Care Corporation, President of the Atlantic Association of Gastroenterology, Program Director of the training program in Internal Medicine at Memorial and has participated in Accreditation Survey teams for both the Royal College and the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada.
