Susan Brien, MD, FRCSC
Vice-President (Asia)

Susan is the chief of neurosurgery at Le Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Gatineau and is past Chief of trauma for the region.  She is also an adjunct professor of surgery at the University of Ottawa.

Susan assumed her current role of director of simulation based education and practice, performance and innovation at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in July 2013. She is also an integral part of Royal College International as the Associate Director for Asia initiatives.

Susan completed her medical degree and residency training at Dalhousie University as well as earned Masters of Education from the University of Toronto.

Oscar Casiro, MD, FRCPC
Regional Director (Latin America)

Dr. Oscar Casiró is Professor Emeritus, Pediatrics and a Member of the Centre for Health Education Scholarship at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Faculty of Medicine. After obtaining a medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, he completed training in Pediatrics and Neonatology at the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Casiró developed an interest in medical education leadership and scholarly activities early in his academic career. He has held leadership positions of progressive responsibility in the field of medical education, including Residency Program Director, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine; Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College) Specialty Committee on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine; Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education (University of Manitoba); Chair of the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee, Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada; President of the Medical Council of Canada; and Founding Regional Associate Dean, Vancouver Island (UBC and University of Victoria).

He has served as Chair of the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and voting member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in the U.S. Dr. Casiró received the 1994 Health or Safety Promotion Award from the Manitoba Medical Association; the 2004 Merit Award from the Canadian Association of Medical Education; the 2004 Administrative Award, presented by the Manitoba Medical Association (now Doctors Manitoba) for contributions to policy and in administration of health care; the 2012 Honorary Medical Alumni Award, from the UBC Medical Alumni Association; the 2014 Award of Excellence, presented by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia; and the 2015 Dr. Louis Levasseur Distinguished Service Award from the Medical Council of Canada.

Dr. Casiró is currently Regional Director for Latin America, Royal College International (RCI), promoting academic partnerships in order to enhance postgraduate medical education in the region.

Joanne Jia, MD, FRCPC
Regional Director (China)

Joanne is currently an adjunct professor of pediatrics at the University of British Columbia. She is also a teacher and examiner of the objectively structured clinical examination in the Children's Hospital of British Columbia and a consulting pediatrician in Surrey Memorial Hospital. She is involved in developing international initiatives and consulting in collaborations with China.

She graduated from Dalian Medical University in China. She had two years pediatric residency training in Albany Medical Center in New York and two years pediatric residency training in BC Children’s Hospital.

Viren Naik, MD, FRCSC
Regional Director (Kuwait)

Viren is the Vice President, Education for The Ottawa Hospital and a professor of anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa. He has 20 years experience as an educator, and is now focused on leading interprofessional education initiatives at his hospital to enhance the learner experience and improve quality and safety for patients.

In 2007 and 2013, Viren received honour awards from the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society for his international contributions to education.  He previously served the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as chair of the national written certification examination for his specialty.

Vern completed his medical school and residency training at the University of Toronto. Additional, he completed his Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto, and a Fellowship in Education from The Wilson Centre for Research in Education as well as his Executive MBA at the Telfer School of Management.

Karim Qayumi, MD, FRCSC
Regional Director (Saudi Arabia)

Karim is a professor of surgery in the division of cardiovascular surgery at the University of British Columbia, former Director of the UBC Centre of Excellence for Simulation Education and Innovation. He is also Chair of Technology Enabled Learning for Vancouver Coastal Health. He is member of the Royal College’s CPS Accreditation Committee and the Technologies and Simulation Committee for the American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes.

He has extensive international teaching experience. He obtained 11 awards in the field of medicine, including in 1999 the most prestigious award from The University of British Columbia — The Killam Teaching Prize.

Karim completed medical school at the Kiev Medical Institute and his residency training at the University of British Colombia.
