IMELF 2018: Leadership in the face of Artificial Intelligence

Jane Casey, RN, MScN is a seasoned leader and innovator with 25+ years in health care across the acute care, rehabilitation, complex continuing care and long-term care sectors. She has led and sustained system wide outcomes with front line staff, patients, families, volunteers and physicians. As Program Director in the Emergency Department, Jane has led the transformation of a very high volume emergency department with high staff and physician engagement, improved patient satisfaction, fiscally responsible surplus budget and improved quality outcomes. Most recently, Jane championed the implementation of Humber River Hospital's Command Centre, a first of its kind in Canada.

Dr. Susan Tory is a General Internist at Humber River Hospital and Medical Director of HRH's Command Centre. Through her role with the Command Centre, Susan has been an integral driver for enhanced and continued physician engagement in aspects of patient flow, communication, quality of care and patient safety.

Prior to joining Humber in 2015, Susan obtained her Bachelor of Science from the University of British Columbia and attended medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Toronto including a fellowship in General Internal Medicine.

Ms. Sophia Leong is currently executive director of Development and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, responsible for executive leadership and management training for local, national and global markets. She was previously executive director of the Telfer Executive MBA Program. She progressively grew the “global, practical, relevant” executive learning platform. The program was ranked the top Global Executive MBA by CEO Magazine for two years running (2017 and 2018). It was also included in the Financial Times’ top 100 (FT 100) in 2018.

Ms. Leong sits on both local and national boards. Her roles include being an advisory board member of Startup Canada and executive-in-residence of the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance. She is a recurring judge for Start-Up Chile and for the Verizon Powerful Answers Award. She co‐founded three companies and was previously vice‐president of Business Development of Klocwork Solutions — a software solution company she commercialized from Nortel Networks. She has successfully exited from two of the three companies.

Ms. Leong has served as a public member of the Council of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada since 2016. She also sits on Council’s Governance Committee. She is currently active on the board of directors of Royal College International (RCI) and was a member of the Strategic Planning Working Group of RCI from 2017-2018. Ms. Leong chairs the RCI Financial Operations Committee and is the RCI board representative on Council’s Financial Reporting and Risk Oversight Committee. She is also a member of the Royal College’s CEO Evaluation and Compensation Committee.

Ms. Leong has extensive strategic and general management experience working with technology companies and on executive leadership education. She has advised over 200 companies and worked with business leaders selected by Ottawa’s Forty Under 40 (co-presented by the Ottawa Business Journal and Ottawa Chamber of Commerce) on “self -leadership and self-branding.” While she was with Nortel Networks, she was directly engaged in commercializing business ventures by leveraging angel and venture capital markets. Ms. Leong was involved with the management of seven business ventures, three of which were global, involving technologies such as neural technology, speech recognition, e‐commerce payment, digital content management/protection and mission-critical assessment applications for software assets.She represented the interests of Nortel Networks when working with respective general managers and its board of directors.

Ms. Leong is the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding contributions. She was a patent recipient on the software business process for Mergers and Acquisition during her time at Nortel Networks and Nortel Technology. She is often tapped to speak on local, national and international platforms.

Shannon Malovec is a highly skilled health informatics leader, passionate about transforming healthcare through patient engagement and experienced in strategic planning, portfolio/program management, and systems implementation.

Shannon is Principal, Patient Engagement at TELUS Health. In her role Shannon leads the strategy development, product management, delivery management, and operations of TELUS Health’s patient facing applications, including Personal Health Record, Home Health Monitoring, and EMR Portals. She also leads the execution of major health transformation initiatives and is responsible for the delivery of consulting services.

Previous to TELUS Health, Shannon was Director, Clinical Solution Delivery for Information Management Information Technology Services (IMITS), Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). Shannon led the execution of major clinical IM/IT projects across PHSA, Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Healthcare. Shannon also led the teams responsible for the Project Portfolio Management Office, Budget Planning and Management, and Performance Management and Benefits Evaluation. Shannon has also worked with a health management consulting company in Canada and in the United States and was engaged in strategic planning, project management and implementation initiatives. Shannon spent time working with various healthcare organizations, hospitals and private sector IT companies in Toronto, New York and Illinois where she was involved in the planning and implementation of a variety of clinical solutions.

Joelle Pineau is an Associate Professor and William Dawson Scholar at McGill University where she co-directs the Reasoning and Learning Lab. She is also the Co-Managing Director of Facebook AI Research and leads the lab in Montreal, Canada. She holds a BASc in Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and an MSc and PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Pineau's research focuses on developing new models and algorithms for planning and learning in complex partially-observable domains. She also works on applying these algorithms to complex problems in robotics, health care, games and conversational agents. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research and the Journal of Machine Learning Research and is currently President of the International Machine Learning Society. She is a recipient of NSERC's E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship (2018), a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), a Senior Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) and in 2016 was named a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists by the Royal Society of Canada.

Dr. Jaron Chong is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Radiology at McGill University. He completed diagnostic radiology residency training at McGill University with an Abdominal Imaging fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital and a Masters in Health Informatics at the University of Toronto. His clinical interests include cross-sectional abdominal imaging, Abdominal/GU oncologic imaging in MRI and CT modalities, with research interests in the appropriate utilization of medical imaging and AI-assisted augmented radiology.
