Sir Roy Yorke Calne, FRCP, FRCS, FRS, FRCPSC (Hon), died on Jan. 6, 2024, in Cambridge, U.K., at age 93. A surgeon-scientist, Sir Roy was an eminent professor and pioneer in organ transplantation surgery. He was recognized with Royal College Honorary Fellowship in 2022 for his outstanding contributions to the fields of transplantation surgery and immunosuppression. Sir Roy’s clinical achievements are innumerable and include the world’s first successful combined stomach, intestine, pancreas, liver and kidney cluster transplantation (1994). John David Cuthill, MD, FRCPC, died on April 1, 2023, in Toronto, Ont., at age 83. Dr. Cuthill was certified by the Royal college in Psychiatry in 1973. He obtained his medical degree from the University of British Columbia in 1965. Throughout his career, Dr. Cuthill practised as a psychiatrist at several hospitals in the Montreal area, including the Douglas Hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Jewish General Hospital and the Montreal Heart Institute. Ronnie Hakim, MD, FRCPC, died on Nov. 4, 2023, in Mississauga, Ont., at age 70. Dr. Hakim was certified by the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1985. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Sherbrooke in 1980. Dr. Hakim was involved in resident training as a Competence by Design Observer for Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Natasha Ferguson, MD, FRCPC, died on Oct. 8, 2023, in Quebec City, Que., at age 52. Dr. Ferguson was certified by the Royal College in Diagnostic Radiology in 2001. She obtained her medical degree from Laval University in 1996. Dr. Ferguson was involved in resident training as a Competence by Design Observer for Surgical Foundations and Diagnostic Radiology. Noah Henry Carpenter, MD, FRCSC, died on Sept. 25, 2023, in Brandon, Man., at age 78. Dr. Carpenter was certified by the Royal College in General Surgery in 1976. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1971. Dr. Carpenter pursued a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery from the University of Edinburgh. Throughout his career, he worked in hospitals and medical clinics in Edmonton, Comox, Winnipeg and Brandon. Read more about Dr. Carpenter

Charles Hector Dumont, MD, FRCPC, died on Nov. 18, 2023, in Gatineau, Que., at age 79. Dr. Dumont was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1978. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Ottawa in 1968. Throughout his career, Dr. Dumont worked at several hospitals in Quebec, including Chisasibi Hospital, l’Hôpital de Fort George and Lakeshore General Hospital. He is remembered as a calm and caring physician and a highly respected mentor. Read more about Dr. Dumont

Arthur Huntley Cole, MD, FRCPC, died on Sept. 22, 2023, in Belleville, Ont., at age 93. Dr. Cole was certified by the Royal College in Anesthesiology in 1961. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1955. Dr. Cole practised as an anesthesiologist at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto for 40 years. Thomas Paul Broome, MD/CM, FRCPC, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Oak Bay, B.C., at age 91. Dr. Broome was certified by the Royal College in Internal Medicine in 1961. He obtained his medical degree from Queen’s University in 1956. Dr. Broome had a private practice in Victoria where he worked for 41 years. Harvey Alexander Armstrong, MD, FRCPC, died on July 24, 2023, in Kingston, Ont., at age 86. Dr. Armstrong was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1971. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1964. Dr. Armstrong was an accomplished child psychiatrist and an advocate for Indigenous Peoples. Read more about Dr. Armstrong

Brian Robert Burke, MD, FRCPC, died on July 6, 2023, in Windsor, Ont., at age 64. Dr. Burke was certified by the Royal College in Psychiatry in 1990. He devoted his career to serving the community of Windsor where he worked as a staff psychiatrist at all local hospitals – most recently, Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare. Dr. Burke made a significant contribution to local health care and held numerous senior positions, including post graduate director of Psychiatry at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry-Windsor and director of the Dual Diagnosis Clinic.
