New survey: Fellow and resident perspectives on AI integration in medical education and practice

In 2019, the Royal College established a Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emerging Digital Technologies. Its mandate was to explore and anticipate the impact of this technological revolution on the organization, as well as on the training of residents and Fellows. The goal was to help navigate the ongoing transformation shaped by AI and digital technologies whose full implications are still unfolding.

The Task Force work engaged with more than 4,000 Fellows and Resident Affiliates in a foundational survey, which informed twelve critical recommendations on AI integration into specialty medicine training and practice across Canada.

Over the past few years, Canada has made significant strides, from launching AI-enhanced imaging and personalized medicine to integrating AI into learning and clinical settings.

As the Royal College prepares to shape a comprehensive national AI strategy, it is crucial that our guidance remain relevant and actionable. To this end, we are re-engaging members with a new survey to:

  1. Ensure our Task Force recommendations remain contemporary, reflecting advancements in AI, clinical tools and educational innovations.
  2. Identify insights at the Fellowship and discipline levels, so our AI agenda and strategy are attuned to the needs of each specialty.
  3. Ensure our strategic recommendations to the Board are informed by current data, enabling us to drive meaningful, evidence-based progress across the Royal College’s AI agenda.
